9 hat linux red Questions and AnswersRed hat Linux 9 getting stuck at updating /etc/fstab.?Q) I am using Red Hat Linux 9, not sure what the exac kernel is but it wont boot up at all. It is stuck on updating /etc/fstab. Being completely new to Linux I am not sure what this means or what I can do about it?
Incidently it works on my friend pc so does this point to hardware issues?
Anyone know what I can do or know of any good forums?
Cheers
I did get it too boot up, I went in to interactive mode and said not to start the first service, I think its the kndu service or something to that effect. I then said yes to start all other services and the OS booted up.
A) You might find some good help on http://www.linuxquestions.org/ . But in all honesty, that is an outdated OS. You might consider using http://fedora.redhat.com or http://www.ubuntu.com (my preferred desktop Linux). They've made great improvements since RH 9 was released about six years ago.can any body tell me how can i change my host or computer name on linux red hat 9.0 ?Q) PLS give me full detail step by step

How to install Red Hat Linux 9.0 ??Q) I have win Xp on my pc and i want to install red hat linux 9.0 , so both will work parallel.I have 80 GB hard disk and i created four partion ( each of them 20 GB).
So for linux should i format one partion or i have to format my xp media center and allocate 20 GB free space for linux.
Pls Help me 'coz i have no idea about how to install linux. I have 3 bootable cd's of Red Hat Linux 9.0.
A) The CD's should have been burnt as A ISO file, not a regular CD, Check the program you used to burn the cd's there should be a setting to create a ISO Image to the CD, Then you just put the CD in the drive and reboot, ( you want to use the Grub installer or you will have issues with getting back into windows,, ).. Umm XCHAT,, remember that when your installing things, You want to get that going, its a chat program like IRC, theres lots of linux help in it.. It took me about three weeks of goofing with linux before I stumbled across it, thats when I started to learn...
(just a word of advice, Linux is ok, Its just like windows, only different)... There was no big thrill, I found that the games that I wanted to play I couldent, My videos would not play on linux, Sites like pogo games would not work nor would sites like cnn.com...
Basicly I found that its just a waste of time, Unless you got some files to crack... Sure there were a lot of accessories like skyview and free paint programs,, But whopty doo... I went back to windows.. ( its the guys that dont have valid copys of windows that say its the coolest thing to hit the internet)... And there just mad because they cant crack windows, so they get linux and think there cool and talk it up..
But hey have fun,,

How do i know which device driver I need to install, and where do i get that. Please help
A) Oh my, *don't* install RH 9, that is *ancient* in computer years. That's almost certainly your problem - RH9 is like 3-4 years old, and doesn't have drivers for things released since then.
I suggest you try either Fedora (7 is the current release) frpm http://fedora.redhat.com or Red hat Enterprise Linux from Redhat (if yoiou feel corporate) or CentOS (if you feel corporate and don't want to pay for support) All 3 of those are very similar to Red Hat 9.Wireless cards that are compatible with Red Hat Linux 9?Q) i need to know some good wireless cards PCI or USB (dosent matter) that are compatible with Red Hat Linux 9. the more the better.
A) Well, personnally I have found the Orinoco Classic cards (gold) seem to work with everything I have tried from RH, Ubuntu, nearly all releases seem to work just fine. I have also used several broadcom and prisim and realtek based cards without issue (those were mini-pci).
The good news is that most will work if you use the correct Linux driver. You may need to get the correct information
see this for some good resources

super information. The dual booting option is not showing when installing Windows XP after Red Hat Linux 9.0. Please help?Q) Red hat Linux 9.0 installation is successfull and tested. Windows XP professional installation is also successful and tested but the dual booting option is vanished. I have done the non dos partition for linux.
A) Look the linux has a nasty habit of making its boot loader the default one when you install it. So if you first install linux and then Xp, The Xp rewrites the boot loader and The linux simply dosent like it. So Keep in mind always install linux at last. The problem is not with your partition. And also remember you can set Windows xp as default os while you are installing linux so why don you try installing xp first n then Linux...good luck n lemme knowTrouble in Linux (Red Hat Linux 9)?Q) i just install the Linux for experiment (i always us windows OS).

Does Linux difficult?
HOW CAN I INSTALL THE SOFTWAREZ IN LINUX?
A) 1. You can not install windows executables (.exe files) on a Linux machine without using a windows emulator like wine.
2. You need to install a media player capable of handling your media files (mpg123 and mplayer should suffice). You may have to compile the source code as explained in the README file included with the packages.
3. Linux is a very network smart system so you will have to do very little network configuration. It knows how to put itself online as soon as you hook the network jack into the back.
4. I do not know how you installed your Linux but it looked like you may have removed all of your partitions when installing. Cant help you there if you did.
Wine, mpg123, and mplayer usually come with your distribution. If not search them online and download them.
You can see if it is installed on your system by bringing up the terminal (this is like a dos prompt) and typing in
man "executable name" to see if the instructions are there.
i.e. man mpg123 to see if it is installed. (type the letter q to exit the help file).
Hope that gets you started.

A) I advise you back up all your data, and re-format, then run a fresh install of the OS, it will force it to re-build all files. Hope it helps.
